1001 Ways God can Humble You
I am a monotheist. I firmly believe in the existence of a Being for I can not resolve it in my mind otherwise. Everything else is just what He has created the way He had wanted it. The critical thinking here requires questioning why has He created the ways? Unfortunately, it is better understood what is created than why is it created. So let us not quibble on the issue. Coming back to the title of this write-up, God can humble you in many ways. Humbling is an act of getting down to earth and relearning how insignificant we are in the broader picture of the Universe, regardless of who we are. The statistical roulette that God has devised determines what will happen to you next, or what will fail to happen. Recently, the elder son of a close friend of mine was kidnapped for ransom. Three weeks later he was recovered but these three weeks were the most difficult times for my friend. I talked to him and tried to feel his agony but I am sure I did not even come close to realizing the trauma that he went through during those days. What struck me was his statement that the incidence made him pray to God in the middle of night. I almost wept. My friend is not a very religious man but he is an honest human being; who when left to totally helpless situation found no place to turn to except within himself; I wept because I realized how fragile the human beings are, totally non-resistant to shattering.
God humbles you through these statistical gyrations. A disease, an accident, an opportunity lost, a relationship gone sour, an expectation lost, a dream unrealized and so many other things that remind us daily of the Greater Plan. What should a man do? Absolutely nothing except to understand that God does have at least 1001 different ways to humble you. Learning to be humble is perhaps the only moral of the story here.
